NBN CO - National Broadband Network

11-04-12 CALL CENTRE

to be located at Varsity Lakes on Gold Coast - in house - expect 100 employees within 12 months.
Kaiser, said: "The new centre will handle the anticipated escalation in NBN queries from the general public, property developers and builders now that the company has begun large-scale rollout of Australia's largest infrastructure project.
"The customer contact centre will play an important role in communicating how the network is being built and the steps householders and business owners will need to take to connect to the NBN and to move across from older infrastructure."
He added: "While NBN Co is not directly selling broadband services to homeowners and businesses the customer centre will support the work of the retail service providers who will have the ongoing relationship with their customers."

13-10-11 GREENFIELD SITES

NBN Co has announced the first new large estate to be connected to the National Broadband Network.
Residents living in the Bunya Estate, at Doonside in Sydney's west, will be among some of the first in the country to have NBN access, with some 112 lots scheduled to be connected under Stage 1 of the estate roll-out and 730 lots in all to be connected eventually.
NBN Co is responsible as provider of last resort for the roll-out in estates of 100 premises or more. The actual work in this case was done by Fujitsu and Service Stream who won the contract for this part of the NBN roll-out.
The roll-out of the NBN to greenfields areas has been bedevilled with practical and policy problems. As a result the programme appears to be running significantly behind schedule in these areas. NBN's corporate plan projected a total of 45,000 greenfields premises passed by the NBN by the end of June this year, with some 35,000 of these receiving active services.

FIBRE

93% of Australian premises will be connected by fibre and will receive a high-speed broadband network that will provide superfast speeds. There are currently five main technologies being used to deliver broadband to residential consumers in Australia: Telstra's copper network (ADSL; ADSL 2+), Telstra and Optus HFC networks, Fibre, Wireless and Satellite.

WIRELESS

NBN will use fixed wireless technology building a network for a more predictable number of users in a given area. The antennas are fixed and installed so that they are directed towards the fixed wireless base station. With mobile wireless the number of users in a cell can vary widely, and the strength of the signal change as you move closer or further away from base station.

NBN appointed five retail service providers to trial fixed wireless services in Armidale. Trials start Feb 2012.

  • iiNet,
  • Internode,
  • SkyMesh,
  • Activ8Me
  • Clear Networks

In April 2012 trials will be rolled out around Ballarat, Darwin, Toowoomba, Tamworth and Geraldton.

    SATELLITE SERVICE

    From Press Release - 6 May 2011
People in homes, small businesses and indigenous communities in some of the most remote areas of Australia will be among the first users of a new a high-speed broadband satellite service provided over the National Broadband Network.
NBN Co's Interim Satellite Service will be available to eligible individuals and small businesses on the mainland and across Tasmania from July 2011, with the first priority being given to those who currently have no alternate access to broadband services.
NBN Co plans to offer a wholesale Interim Satellite Service capable of peak download speeds up to 6Mbps*, to be available via participating retail service providers.
NBN Co has a contract worth up to $200 million with Optus for managed satellite services. A second contract valued at $100 million has been signed with IPstar.
The Interim Satellite Service has been developed to assist the transition from the Australian Broadband Guarantee program to NBN's long-term satellite solution. It is planned that eligible rural, remote and isolated Australians will be able to receive up to a 12Mbps service when NBN Co launches two satellites in 2015.
NBN Co CEO Mike Quigley said: "Today's announcement is a major step towards reducing the digital divide between those Australians who live in the city and those in the bush.
NBN Co's satellite and fixed-wireless services are intended to serve the seven per cent of the nation's premises that its fibre optic cable rollout will be unable to reach. NBN Co is currently finalising contracts for its fixed wireless service, which is due to be available from mid 2012.
While the 6Mbps/1Mbps Interim Satellite Service will be offered to retail service providers (RSPs) as a wholesale access service, premises-based terminal equipment and dishes will be installed and maintained by NBN Co.
From July it is planned that up to 300 new priority one end-user services per month will be installed during a transition period running until October 2011. From November NBN Co is aiming to provide capacity for up to 1000 new installations per month. Additional RSPs will be on-boarded commencing June 2011.
