AIR POLLUTION EXCEEDS HAZARDOUS LEVELS IN NSW
This week Sydney (and some country areas) saw pollution levels many times the hazardous levels set by Governments. The headlines said it all: "Sydney's air 11 times worse than 'hazardous' levels as Australia's bushfires rage". The danger varied from person to person. Some can tolerate short term discomfort, but others are significantly affected. The long term damage cannot be avoided. People were advised to stay indoors.

AIR POLLUTION AND WORKERS
Your managers have a positive obligation to provide a safe workplace. If suitable face masks can overcome the risk, then the manager is required by law to provide them. Suitable masks must protect you from smoke & particulate ingestion. If the masks are not available, then other measures must be considered.
In Sydney your manager would have held discussions with you to discuss the risks and measures to avoid them. If your Manager does not provide measures, then you need to take measures to avoid exposure including leaving the job. You are not required to work in situations where you are exposed to risk, or where you are affected by the environment.
Circumstances will vary from workplace to workplace and from person to person. We are being told that we face further hazardous levels of air pollution. One rule prevails - if your health is affected, remove yourself from the hazard. This may mean advising your team leader and going home.
If your employer cannot provide a safe workplace, any you cannot work, then your employer cannot deduct sick leave or stop pay.

POST SPF
A state consultative meeting took place last Thursday. The meeting broke down with Post making false allegations against our Branch. Post reported that they did not receive any responses to the EOI. The Parramatta Branch comments also did not help. We agreed to another meeting on Monday afternoon. If an acceptable compromise cannot be reached we will take the matter to the Fair Work Commission.
