TELSTRA - WORKDAY
People Express is being replaced by a new system called WorkDay. Telstra says that some realignment will take place between the workcode and a Workstream employee's workstream and band details. We have never seen a smooth change in payroll systems and we are receiving some queries. Telstra are confident saying: Importantly, these changes will have no impact on employees' existing fixed remuneration, actual salary, redundancy pay or Telstra superannuation contributions. Where the realignment results in a variation to an employee's base salary, there will be a corresponding salary allowance to ensure that the employee's existing Fixed Remuneration is retained. The salary allowance which will be displayed on their payslip.
PAY RISES FOR POLITICIANS - WHAT ABOUT ME?
Since 2009 parliamentary salaries have been increasing at an average of 5% per year, almost twice as fast as working people's wages, which have grown at 2.8 per cent by WPI over the same period. This year politicians will receive another 2% pay rise on the same day that 700,000 low-paid workers have their penalty rates cut for the third year. The Morrison Government voted 8 times to keep cutting penalty rates and has refused to support significant increases in the minimum wage necessary to ensure that no minimum wage worker lives in poverty. Scott Morrison will personally receive an $11,000 pay rise this year alone. He is also planning to grant himself an $11,000 tax cut in 2024. The Reserve Bank has repeatedly warned that low wage growth is a significant factor in the slowing economy, which is now growing at its slowest rate since the GFC.
ISGM CLASS ACTION CASE
Shine lawyers report that ISGM have filed a defence and have denied the allegation that group members who entered sub-contracting arrangements with ISGM were actually employees of ISGM. The Federal Court heard several legal arguments on 14 May and will hear further arguments in August or October. We encourage you to inform your fellow workers of this class action and the registration process so that the case can gather as much support as possible.
OPTUS SATELLITE ISSUES
It now appears that we will meet in the near future. Optus have advised that they should be in a position to arrange the meeting this week.
TRAINEE SALARIES - PROGRAMMED
We are currently reviewing salaries of Trainees as we are concerned that Programmed have not correctly interpreted the Modern Awards. We are also looking at reimbursements for travel. If you have any concerns, please contact us.
HEY TEAM - GREAT NEWS - YOU MUST BUY YOUR OWN UNIFORM
Some members have received this wonderful news:
Hey team, As you may have heard over the last few months, we're going to be transitioning to a new uniform! The new uniform consists of:
- A grey Telstra Polo, which will be supplied to you once available. Ops will ask you for your shirt size soon. You'll also get a jacket for those cold wintry days. J
- Pre-approved jeans from Jeanswest which you will need to purchase. You can only wear jeans from this approved list.
- Black or brown leather business shoes. Not sneakers. Not fully sick triple black Yeezys. Definitely not thongs. You need to purchase these as well if you don't already have them.
This will be strictly enforced once introduced. There is no wiggle room or space for interpretation. You will be sent home unpaid if you turn up in the wrong uniform.
So what do you need to do now?
- Take the attached flyer to JeansWest and purchase jeans from the approved style list. This needs to be done prior to June 30th. That's the end of this month.
- You'll also need to purchase black or brown leather shoes. Nothing extravagant or multi-coloured.
- The jeans and leather business shoes are tax deductable, and can be claimed back if purchased by EOFY June 30.
HEY TEAM - GREAT NEWS - DON'T BUY IT
If you have a clause in your employment contract where you agreed to buy your own uniform - you need to get it checked to determine if it is binding. Contact us asap for advice. Otherwise, you do not have to buy the Telstra uniform. Contact us immediately if you are pressed to buy your own uniform. To those who study labour history, recall events last century the boss made you buy your tools, or hire them from the boss. It was good for the boss. But it was a rort!
This week Visionstream announced that those employees seeking redeployment would have their exit date extended to 21 June to allow further time to seek redeployment opportunities. This followed a notice of a Dispute in the Fair Work Commission. Further talks are due this week.
We have not yet seen any developments with the new CFW6 classification. The issue of classifications is being assessed by the T&S Branches in NSW and Vic. We have a number of groups now who have legitimate claims for upgrading from CFW4 to CFW5 or higher, from CFW5 to CFW7. It seems in all areas, job skills and responsibility has increased or been devolved. We are assembling the responses of a number of groups and will work with the Vic Branch to develop a response.
