SINGLE BUNDLE DELIVERY
SBD CAMPAIGN

The SBD campaign was won with many members contributing.

This page recognises those members who refused to undertake SBD duties on safety grounds and were stood down without pay. This not only caused loss of income, it also caused anxiety and stress as gung ho managers threatened even more.

On behalf of all members of CWU, we thank you.

Dan Dwyer CWU National Secretary

TASMANIA

We thank Glenn Haas (Authorised Union Rep WSDC), Tim Hutt (AUR ESDC) and Ben Bracken (AUR KDC) for their tireless and dedicated contribution during this prolonged dispute.

Special mention must go to Tom Richardson (AUR WSDC). Tom was the first postie nationally to be stood down by Australia Post for refusing to perform SBD, due to the health and safety concerns he had for himself, fellow workmates and the public. It was a traumatic time for Tom, who did not flinch in his belief that SBD was an ill thought out, badly implemented, and most importantly, unsafe, process.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

The dispute moved to WA when six members were stood down without pay:
Brett Wills
Mark Fenton
Joe Cerin
Mark Davis
Mark Tottman
Brendan Crilly
They were supported by postal workers in WA.

We thank the Telco members who rose to the occasion and supported our fellow members working for Australia Post. WA Telco members shone again by donating their hard earned money to the cause for our Postal members fighting against the dangerous practice of Separate Bundle Delivery. Along with the members who went without and stood their ground in the pursuit of ending this dangerous practice equal thanks should be distributed to all who contributed. Well Done To All.

VICTORIA

The dispute really escalated in Victoria when Post tried to roll out SBD at Airport West DC and Mt Waverley DC.

In total, 45 members were stood down without pay, some for up to 3 weeks etc. We do not have all the names at present.

The Vic members rallied to support them with donations. Fund raisers were held and all members received some welfare payments. And members from other states made contributions to the welfare fund.

ALL STATES - THE TURNING POINT

The refusal by members to undertake unsafe work (dubbed unprotected industrial action by Post managers) got the attention of the CEO Ahmed Fahour. The historic meeting of the 21 posties convinced the CEO (in our opinion) that there was something very wrong with SBD. This enabled the suspension of the roll-out, the return to work of the 45 members in Victoria, and the creation of joint working parties.

For the names of the 21 posties, see Historic Meeting with 21 Posties

NEW SOUTH WALES

No members were stood down but NSW was used by the Working Groups to study the times and associated measures. Michael Etue (CWU National Office) and Peter Chalanor (NSW P&T Branch Organiser) monitored a group of volunteers at Leightonfield and Alexandria. These members reluctantly allowed their work to be closely scrutinised so that accurate data could be obtained.

It was this data that finally spelt the end of SBD as mis-sorts and outdoor times outweighed any desktop perceived benefits of SBD.
