The NP/LP Government is a minority Government and relies on the support of an Independent. The Goss Government had been re-elected in early 1995 by the narrowest margin. Goss had been Premier since 1989. There is no upper house in Queensland. An inquiry into a deal between the Borbidge and the Queensland Police Union is under way. The inquiry was effectively shut down following an inquiry into the inquiry.

TASMANIA

The Liberal Government retains power as a minority Government following an election on 10th March 1996. There has been no guarantee of support from the Greens who hold more than the balance of power. The situation is unstable. Labor refuses to enter into a coalition with the Greens to form Government.

The Liberal Government proposed and passed legislation to reduce the number of seats from 35 to 25. This makes it more difficult for minor parties to win a seat. Now they need 16.6% of the vote to win a seat. An election was called immediately and there was a strong swing to Labor. The election was held on 29 Aug 98. The Result was a win to Labor with Jim Bacon as Premier.

Jul 2002 20 July election say a major swing to Labor. The Liberals suffered a major defeat while the greens gained.

Mar 2006 Following the death of Jim Bacon, Paul Lennon led the party to the election. Labor secured 50%, the Liberals 32% and the Tasmanian Greens 16%.
