The John Brumby Labor opposition made some gains but the Liberals hold Government by a large majority. The Liberals control the Upper House. A Senate inquiry into the Casino tendering process is pending. The swing to labor was 2.7%. Mar99: Labor opposition leader John Brumby resigns to be replaced by Steve Bracks Aug99: The election was called for 18 Sep 99. The ALP needed a swing of 5.3%. The Liberals were expected to increase their majority. However the result surprised everyone. After a by election due to the death of a candidate, the 3 independents supported labor and Mr Bracks formed a minority government. May00: By-election in Benalla won by Labor. Dec02: General election won with a landslide. The Government was re-elected on 14 Dec 96. 2001 The Liberals were swept from power on 10 Feb 2001, after 8 years in office. Labor won at least 31 seats and the new premier is Dr Geoff Gallop. Labor will not control the upper house. One Nation, with almost 10% of the vote is expected to win 2-3 upper house seats. The NP/LP Government is a minority Government and relies on the support of an Independent. The Goss Government had been re-elected in early 1995 by the narrowest margin. Goss had been Premier since 1989. There is no upper house in Queensland. An inquiry into a deal between the Borbidge and the Queensland Police Union is under way. The inquiry was effectively shut down following an inquiry into the inquiry. In June 1998, the state election took place. Labour formed Government with the support of one independent. On 17 Feb 2001, Labour was forced to the polls after a "rorts" scandal. Premier Beattie has acted swiftly to remove those members. One Nation had been deregistered and imploded, with CCA emerging. Labor won a stunning victory. Qld has no upper house. On 7th February 2004, the election saw a 4.5% swing against Labor, leaving Labor with 54.7% of the two party vote. There has been no guarantee of support from the Greens who hold more than the balance of power. The situation is unstable. Labor refuses to enter into a coalition with the Greens to form Government. The Liberal Government proposed and passed legislation to reduce the number of seats from 35 to 25. This makes it more difficult for minor parties to win a seat. Now they need 16.6% of the vote to win a seat. An election was called immediately and there was a strong swing to Labor. The election was held on 29 Aug 98. The Result was a win to Labor with Jim Bacon as Premier. Jul 2002 20 July election say a major swing to Labor. The Liberals suffered a major defeat while the greens gained. Mar 2006 Following the death of Jim Bacon, Paul Lennon led the party to the election. Labor won another seat to gain a majority. 341,000 Tasmanians voted to elect a new Parliament for 2006-2009, with 5 Lower House politicians elected in each of the 5 multi-member electorates of Bass, Braddon, Denison, Franklin and Lyons. Premier Dean Brown dumped in Nov 96 by former leader John Olsen. February 2002. The election saw the emergence of the ALP again following support from one independent. The Labor Premier is now Mike Rann. They have never lost a seat, until 18 August 2001. Labor won a stunning majority, against all odds and against all expectations. Allegations of corruption hounded the CLP. The new Chief Minister is Clare Martin. 2005: 19 June.
