Telstra Purple acquires services provider Epicon - 01 Dec 2020

Telstra has acquired IT service management provider Epicon, an addition to the technology services capabilities of its Telstra Purple business.

Operating since 2008, Epicon was an Australian-owned company with more than 100 technical specialists and operations in ACT, VIC, NSW and QLD.

It supports organisations to digitally transform through IT service management and IT operations, providing operational insight through data integration and analytics.

Epicon services an Australian customer base with large enterprise clients including the ATO and the Department of Home Affairs.

Telstra enterprise executive and Telstra Purple head Chris Smith says the acquisition of Epicon will help enable Telstra Purple to provide customers with visibility and performance of their IT assets and underlying service providers, with the acquisition representing a step in the execution of Telstra enterprise's services-led growth strategy.

Telstra launches MSP called 'Purple'

Telstra has established a new managed and professional services business, and has already laid claim to being "Australia's largest technology services business."

Called "Telstra Purple", it combines the company's Enterprise services with acquired companies such as Kloud, VMtech, O2 Networks, Bridgepoint, Readify, MSC Mobility, NSC, iVision and Company85.

It's a big and well-skilled organisation: Telstra says Purple already boasts "1500 certified experts in network, security, cloud, collaboration, mobility, software, data and analytics, and design."

Telstra's enterprise director Michael Ebeid confirmed that those brands will be retired. However, no redundancies will be made, according to Ebeid, who said Purple is actually growing its headcount.

Purple will be led by Christopher Smith, Telstra's executive director of global services.

"Telstra Purple helps us take a clear and integrated value proposition to our customers, alongside our traditional products and services, as a single branded entity," said Smith.

"Our approach to Purple has been deeply collaborative, a reflection of what we stand for and how we engage with our customers - even our name came from one of our team."

Purple was launched today at Telstra's Vantage conference in Melbourne. The launch was a broad-brush affair, with few details on offer about Purple's services.

What we do know so far is that Purple seems consultancy-led: it's emphasising offerings such as "Digital Infrastructure and Business Agility" and "digital culture" rather than tying itself to technologies or vendor partners.

It has, however, hinted at its capabilities by announcing Qantas, Kennards and Indigital as some of its first customers. It's also published a video case study telling the story of a security project and another explaining a virtual reality project at the University of Queensland.

While Purple sits comfortably within Telstra's enterprise business, Ebeid said that the company was seeing strong demand for digital transformation services in the mid-market as well.

And the name "Purple"? Telstra said it's a contraction of "Purpose" and "People".

Telstra Enterprise has consolidated its professional and technical services businesses, largely built through a string of acquisitions, into a single brand dubbed `Telstra Purple'.

The telco said that Telstra Purple comprises more than 1500 people, who between them work on more than 8000 projects a year. Telstra Purple is Australia's largest technology services business, the company claimed.

Telstra Purple brings together VMTech, MSC, Readify, Kloud, Bridgepoint, O2, NSC, iVision, and the UK's Company85, and will offer services in Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and the UK.

The announcement was made at the telco's enterprise conference, Telstra Vantage.

"It's something that our customers have been asking for for a while," said Michael Ebeid, the head of Telstra Enterprise.

How to get your Hybrid IT 'll be able to package that up in terms of the different elements - whether it be the work that we do today with, say, VMtech, or Kloud and Readify etc. -- and we'll be able to provide all those solutions together."

"So often today when we work with our corporate customers, we will use different parts of many of those acquisitions to bring together a holistic solution," he said. "This way it's just dealing with one company, one brand, which will be a little bit easier for our customers."

He told Computerworld that Telstra didn't plan to eliminate any roles as part of the consolidation.

"We're actually growing that part of the business," Ebeid said. "It's a people business," he added. "Part of this announcement and bringing those brands together is absolutely not about any redundancies or role reductions - that is a part of the business we're actually growing because there's a big demand."

Executive director, global services, Christopher Smith will lead Telstra Purple, the company said.

"Telstra Purple helps us take a clear and integrated value proposition to our customers, alongside our

traditional products and services, as a single branded entity," Smith said in a statement.

"Our approach to Telstra Purple has been deeply collaborative, a reflection of what we stand for and how we engage with our customers - even our name came from one of our team."
