CWU T&S WEEKLY BULLETIN NO 2020 / 08
08 MAR 2020

POST SWLF MEETING
We are meeting next Wednesday at SWLF to discuss several issues with Post. If you have any matters, please contact me of Howard Avins and we will take them up.

POST SPF ISSUES ARISE
We will be meeting with Post on Wednesday at 1pm to discuss the various issues (Overtime, Rosters, Welcome back etc.) See our last Bulletin.

POST SGF ROSTER
We have written to Post outlining our OHS issues with the proposed one man roster at SGF. We will review this Monday when we see the response.

I refer to my phone call yesterday. I am advised that you have decided to introduce one man shifts from Monday at SGF despite agreement at the last consultative meeting that there were further steps to be concluded before this can happen.
First it was not agreed that operational staff would work with technical staff during their break or at all.
Secondly there are significant OHS issues to be resolved and relevant documentation was promised. This has not occurred.
Thirdly the consultative group has not identified which tasks are 2 man tasks. Staff are left in the dark.
Fourthly there is no procedure in place outlining what the technician has to do in an emergency.
Fifthly there is no procedure in place outlining what the technician has to do if assistance is required.
There are other issues. No overall plan has been explained and detailed to staff. It is just a new roster for all to interpret.
In the circumstances, if this haphazard introduction proceeds, we have no option but to advise members not to undertake certain tasks because of OHS concerns.
Post cannot leave it to the technical staff to wing it and develop their own OHS plan. There have already been injuries in the workplace at SPF/SGF. Technical staff will obey OHS laws and will not work on equipment when it is not safe, and with others unless the others are qualified and/or trained.

TELSTRA TRIPLE ZERO
Following our request for a meeting and our meeting on Friday we can report:

The box under the table that can injure a leg has had padding fitted. Members should advise us if this has not been effective.

The requirement to answer calls with a mouse click within 3 seconds has caused concern as it takes time to put your hand on the mouse, move it and click. This caused possible performance issues as that time is significant given the 3 second target. In the old system, pressing the enter key was faster. Telstra noted that the compliance target was reduced from 100% to 98% and most staff met this target. Telstra will also consider returning to use of the enter button and even our suggestion of the space bar or any key.

COVID 19
Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new coronavirus primarily affecting people who have recently been to certain countries. We urge you to keep across the Government advice on this issue. However, this also affects the workplace and we can comment on this. Your employer is required under the OHS legislation to provide a healthy and safe workplace. Your employer has an obligation to provide information and training regarding potential health risks. This will apply differently across workplaces. They will have obligations to ensure that co-workers are not exposed to known cases or contacts. They will be required to provide any contacts of cases to public health authorities.
They also have obligations to take reasonable care that their acts or omissions do not adversely affect the H&S of other persons. In the circumstances of an infectious disease/public health threat this is relevant to those who have COVID-19. Workers and HSRs have rights to be informed about precautions to be taken and to challenge preventative health measures.

COVID 19 - WHAT IT MEANS
Here are some observations for your information. If you require further information, please contact us.

  • Workers have rights to refuse to carry out work if the worker has reasonable concern the work would expose themselves to a serious risk from an immediate or imminent exposure to a hazard.
  • HSRs may direct a stoppage of work if the same circumstances exist.
  • Employers will need to ensure that no one is discriminated on the basis of sickness (including COVID 19).
  • If you contact COVID 19 at work, the usual workers compensation benefits should apply.
  • If you contact COVID 19 outside work, sick leave will apply.
  • If you are directed to go home (ill or not) you should be paid.
  • If you self-isolate (because you MAY be a risk) then the position is unclear.

TELSTRA RECLASSIFICATIONS
Telstra has responded - see below. We intend to follow this up. Would members please access Workday to determine if you have been reclassified in the process. This has been done secretly and members have not been advised of any changes. The instructions are below.

TELSTRA CLASSIFICATIONS - WORKDAY
Telstra has responded to our matters as follows:

As requested, please find our overview of the realignment activities from May 2019.
  • Of the current 4,472 Workstream employees, only 11% underwent realignment.
  • 56 employees were down-banded (20 within the same stream)
  • 18 employees were up banded (8 in same stream)
  • Only 4 employees moved down more than 1 band
  • 414 were moved stream, the common trends were moving from CFW - TW, TW - SW and CSSW - SW.
These changes have no impact on the employees existing Fixed Remuneration, Actual Salary, Telstra superannuation contributions or redundancy entitlements.
When employees were realigned, we did so to ensure that they were correctly aligned to the relevant core job description for the work that perform.
As requested, find the Work Instructions attached to direct the employees to view their Band and Stream in Workday.

TELSTRA - CHECK YOUR CLASSIFICATION
These are provided from Telstra
