    BACKGROUND

    The dominent carrier in Singapore is SingTel, the former monopoly. SingTel was privatized on 1/4/1993 and listed in Singapore Stock Exchange. The telecom market in Singapore was fully liberaised with StarHub, a new fixed line operator, operating from 1st April 2000.

  • Virgin Mobile - established 2000 - 4th mobile operator, a 50-50 joint venture worth US$550m between Singapore Telecom and Richard Branson's UK Virgin group.

    3G LICENCES

    April 2001
    Singapore cancelled its auction of 3G licences following the withdrawl of outside bidders. The 3 licences were allocated to 3 existing carriers:

  • MobileOne
  • Singapore Telecom Mobile
  • Starhub
    The carriers are obliged to roll out 3G by the end of 2004.
